How often have you started a New Year with every intention of losing a few pounds? You make your resolution on 1st January and by the end of the month ( at best!) you run out of motivation and slip back into your old ways of eating. If you have tried various diets you have probably starved yourself at various stages, lost some weight quickly and then put the weight back on. When hungry (as in dieting by excluding meals or taking on insufficient calories), our metabolisms go into a defensive mode and prepare for a period of fasting. This helps the body consume less energy which of course means that we then use up less fat. Constant hunger then leads to false hunger signals and patterns of binging and craving as the mind prepares the body for future starvation by building up reserves. What is required is a healthier approach to eating and exercise together with a need to reset the mind's expectations that food will be provided when hungry; there is no need to store up reserves as the stop/ go patterns of eating have ceased.
