Golf

In my opinion, there are two key areas of golf that most club golfers ignore. One is practicing their short game; go to any driving range or practice ground in the country and you will see lines of people thrashing away with the latest “big beast” which is going to help them hit 300 yard drives every time (according to the marketing department!). The logic of this is a bit mystifying as they probably only use a driver 14 times during a round of golf at the most. How many pitches, chips and putts do they record each time they play? In relative terms, how much time do they spend on learning proper short game technique and then practicing it compared to time spent on the driving range?

The second area is the mental side of the game. We allow negative thinking to cloud our judgement and cause the tensions that then result in a poor shot, a self fulfilling prophecy in a way. How often have you thought “don’t put the ball in the water / bunker / into those trees etc” and then done exactly that? This is caused by a poor mental state leading to conflicting messages being delivered to the brain which then fails to recognise what you are actually trying to achieve. The brain responds best to positive messages e.g. “hit the ball to that exact target”, rather than negative messages. The mind doesn’t always recognise the “don’t” part of an instruction, hence the ball ends up in the water or bunker.

Hypnosis helps you to access all of the positive resources which are in the unconscious part of your mind such as the memories of good shots and the ability to think positively and relax in the face of nervous tension. It can help to ease first tee nerves or that gut wrenching feeling that a three foot putt brings on in some of us. This is done by the hypnotist helping the golfer into a trance state where the conscious mind becomes relaxed and occupied and the client can then recover and amplify positive experiences and make profound changes to their way of thinking or behaving.

The hypnotist cannot give you extra talent, he simply helps you to amplify the skills you have and gives you access to as much of your talent as possible by improving your mental focus and ability to relax at critical times. Hypnosis can help control anxiety levels, enhance motivation and improve self confidence. It can help you to memorise what is good about your game and stop negative self talk which can damage your self esteem.
